Two photo sessions today at Dovehill Studio, with Louise Schmid and Tian Miller.  I've yet to choose a picture from my time with Louise, so I'll post that up in the next few days.  Here is Tian's contribution:

Developments #2

(Please see here for an introduction to this project and an appeal for participants.)

There have been lots of developments behind the scenes since the last update.  I have 3 shoots arranged over the next week so, if all goes to plan, there should be some more photographs appearing here shortly.  It has amazed me how much the internet has contributed to this project.  So often we hear the bad side of the internet, but it's been a fantastic networking tool for me.  Almost everyone taking part, so far, I have either found through research on the internet, or they have been recommended to me through someone I met online.

Developments #1

(Please see here for an introduction to this project and an appeal for participants.)

Well, this blog has only been up a matter of days and already I have had positive responses from a few women artists, and good feedback from others.  I am grateful for all help and suggestions, and particular thanks are due to my Australian friend, Lulu, who wondered why I hadn't mentioned musicians in the list of artists wanted.  Once she said it, of course, I wondered why I hadn't too.  The upshot is I now have a musician signed up and ready to photograph, so keep the suggestions coming, folks!

Another exciting development is that another online friend, Fred Schenk, has approached me about the possibility of a joint exhibition in Germany in around 6 months time.  Fred is also working on a project concerning workers in their environment.  If all goes well, I hope to have enough material to put together an interim collection for that, with the project continuing on the home front.

Introduction

Creating Women

This is an appeal for women artists and craftspeople who will allow themselves to be photographed in their working environments.  I am a Glasgow-based photographer pursuing a personal project.  Eventually, I hope to attract funding to mount an exhibition of these photographs, but in the meantime it's a non-funded private pursuit.

So, why Creating Women?  We rarely see into this world of the artist, and even more rarely are we invited into the creative spaces inhabited by women.  I want to explore that world with a series of environmental portraits where the space, the tools, and the woman interact creatively.  I want to include all types of creative women - painters, potters, jewellers, printmakers, theatre artists, musicians, dancers, sculptors, and anyone else who is willing to let me spend an hour or two in their workplace with my camera.  I find it interesting to show women working/creating, rather than the way we normally see images of women costructed in the media, etc, where the woman is often passive and there just to be looked at for being a woman.  It is this active/creative image of women I want to create in the consciousness of my audience, thus "Creating Women".

If you are a woman artist, or you know of someone who may be interested in getting involved in the project, please email me at sleepy_tigercub@hotmail.com to discuss it further.  Initially, I will be concentrating on artists from Glasgow and central Scotland, but hope to venture further afield as the project progresses.

I intend to update this blog with photographs of the progress of the project along the way, so check back periodically to see how I'm getting on.
